Data radio broadcasts and mini-radio network
Artists: Sarah Grant & Danja Vasiliev
Residency dates: August 7 to August 21

Sarah Grant and Danja Vasiliev are known for their work with alternative wireless networks and communication systems, in playful and unorthodox manner. During their Eleonore residency, they propose (1) data (packet) radio broadcasts - run a series of experiments for distributing digital data using short and long wave radio channels. They work with multiple alternative devices and Linux which has support for a great number of those - sound cards, TV-tuners, etc. Software Defined Radio (eg RTL-SDR) can also be used for forming radio waves, especially fitting the spectrum of 100-500Mhz (FM). (2) A network of mini-radio devices (antenna-button-LED) for modelling network topologies and travel paths of data from one device to other. Each mini-radio device has a button, antenna and a LED. Each device can be triggered (by pressing a button) to send a packet, which other devices will receive and indicate (LED). Multiple networking structures, chain reactions and data avalanches can be explored and modeled using the set. It also suits well for teaching about the way networks work.
